If your tooth has a new, small area of decay, a filling is usually the most appropriate treatment.  Anesthetic is often used to make you comfortable.  I remove the decay using a handpiece and small dental instruments.  The tooth is then refilled using tooth colored, composite resin material.  I never use silver colored, amalgam filling material.
